One of the biggest mistakes still made by many organizations — including governments and large enterprises — is treating a data center project as a normal construction project and awarding it as a single “Design & Build” contract from day one.

A data center is not just another building.

It is a mission-critical facility that requires specialized technical expertise, operational planning, scalability vision, and deep understanding of resiliency and business continuity.

Unfortunately, many organizations still assign these projects to general contractors or consultants whose expertise is mainly limited to conventional civil, electrical, or mechanical works.

In many cases, the actual data center infrastructure is later handled by subcontractors, leading to fragmented responsibilities and weak technical coordination.

This approach often results in:

• Poor infrastructure planning

• Oversized or undersized systems

• Future expansion limitations

• High operational costs

• Weak redundancy architecture

• Cooling and power design mistakes

• Poor system integration

• Weak commissioning processes

• Vendor-driven decisions instead of business-driven requirements

One of the most serious problems that continues to happen is assigning civil or architectural consultants to design data centers, especially when the facility is part of an existing building.

Many of these consultants specialize in conventional construction projects — not critical infrastructure.

Yet some still accept data center projects despite fully knowing that this field is outside their real expertise.

Clients are sometimes led to believe that a data center is simply “a room with air conditioning and some equipment.”

The reality is completely different.

A data center is a highly specialized technical environment requiring expertise in:

• Critical power systems

• Precision cooling systems

• Redundancy and high availability

• Fire detection and suppression systems

• Network infrastructure

• Physical security

• Monitoring and control systems

• Operations and business continuity

Even the physical structure itself differs significantly from ordinary buildings.

Data center floors, slabs, walls, doors, and service pathways must be engineered specifically for critical infrastructure requirements, including:

• Structural load capacity

• Fire resistance ratings

• Thermal insulation

• Raised floor systems

• Cable containment and segregation

• Service routing

• Equipment accessibility and maintainability

Any mistake during the planning and design stage may later lead to:

• Extremely expensive modifications

• Major redesign requirements

• Capacity restrictions

• Operational inefficiencies

• Reliability issues

• Serious long-term business risks

The unfortunate reality is that many problems only begin to appear after construction starts — or even worse, after operations begin.

At that point, some parties attempt to distance themselves from responsibility by saying:

“We are not data center specialists.”

Unfortunately, correcting infrastructure mistakes later often costs multiple times more than designing the facility correctly from the beginning.

This is not theoretical discussion.

It is based on years of practical exposure to recurring mistakes across real projects.

A properly designed data center can operate reliably for 15–20 years.

A poorly planned one becomes an operational problem from day one.

The cost of hiring specialized expertise at the beginning is always far lower than the cost of fixing mistakes later.
